Map of historic water systems
Waterlogging during torrential rain and a shortage of fresh water during periods of drought: in the Netherlands, dealing with water has been a challenge for centuries. And as we have been faced with this task for so long, the remains of water systems and water storage facilities can be found throughout the country. Some have fallen into disuse, or have been rendered obsolete by system interventions.
This interactive map shows where elements of such water systems can or could be found, such as spillways, inundation areas and watermill systems with brooks or springs, locks, and sluices.
These cultural-historical locations offer inspiration and solutions to modern-day questions regarding water storage during torrential rain and drought.
