Dwingelderveld Climate Buffer

The restructuring of the Dwingelderveld national park, which is focused on system restoration, commenced in mid-2010. This restoration entails re-wetting heathlands and restoring channels for the delayed discharge of water to the lower-lying brook valleys and agricultural grounds on the outskirts of the nature reserve. The Noordenveld agricultural enclave, situated at the heart of the Noordenveld area, has been taken out of agricultural use and converted (trenches, ditches, and watercourses have been filled in), which has added another 200 hectares to the nature reserve. The Dwingelderveld area will accommodate some peak water storage, which will contribute to the realisation of the regional water tasking. Recent years have regularly seen pluvial flooding at several locations, including in the city of Meppel.

Results

In supplement to the measures implemented in the Dwingelderveld area, climate buffering measures will be taken in the Anserveld and Leisloot areas on the outskirts of the Dwingelderveld nature park, within the framework of the Anserveld – Leisloot – Ootmaanlanden project (total peak storage of 50,000 m³). In addition, the design of the Ootmaanlanden area offers opportunities for creating a climate buffer on the outskirts of the Holtingerveld. The design of the Ootmanlanden area provides 600,000 m³ of peak water storage.

The goal of the Dwingelderveld Anserveld – Leisloot – Ootmaanlanden climate buffer project is: “Minimising unwanted drying up and pluvial flooding in the Dwingelderveld and Holtingerveld drainage basin, whilst at the same time enhancing the natural values and recreational perception value of the area, thus allowing these areas to serve as a key climate buffer, and as an example to other projects in the Netherlands. In addition, the climate buffer will contribute to the realisation of the regional water tasking.”

The costs of the implementation of the Anserveld, Leisloot, and Ootmanlanden plans have been estimated at 3.299.000 euros.
