Water in the Rotterdam districts of Zuidwijk and Lombardijen
At the behest of the municipality of Rotterdam, in collaboration with Vestia, ComWonen and Hollandse Delta district water board, West 8 and Rigo conducted a study in 2007 into water in the Rotterdam districts of Zuidwijk and Lombardijen. In an innovative and renewing manner, the study demonstrated how meeting the water challenge can contribute to raising the appeal of existing living environments, thus helping to achieve the successful urban renewal of Zuidwijk and Lombardijen.

Rotterdam is striving to be an attractive city, with varied living environments, an attractive city centre, and an appealing countryside in the surrounding area. Water can be an effective means through which to make Rotterdam a varied city in which to live. This endeavour is expressed in different visions: Stadsvisie (Urban Vision), Waterplan (Water Plan) and the Pact op Zuid collaborative. Opportunities lie particularly in Rotterdam Zuid. The “Pact op Zuid” programme involves large investments in the southern part of Rotterdam in the coming years.
In addition to investments in education, health care facilities, the economy, and infrastructure, investments will also be made in the quality of water and green vegetation. A higher quality of green and water offers the possibility of enhancing the variation between the city’s districts and integrating more water into the living environment. By doing this in an attractive manner, the city can kill two birds with one stone: more water enriches the quality of the living environments and solves the water problem.
