Coping capacity of the Island of Dordrecht

The ambition set down for the Island of Dordrecht is to ensure a sufficient coping capacity. In an extreme situation (storm at sea and high river discharge), the residents of Dordrecht cannot leave the island. A sufficient coping capacity means that the residents can survive for a certain period on the Island of Dordrecht. The goal of this testing ground is to obtain, based on three workshops, a picture of how the aforementioned ambition can be achieved: what measures need to be taken, and how can these measures be linked with other projects/activities in the study area. The testing ground also contributes to forming an initial picture of the support and the preferences of the regional parties involved.

Results

Within the testing ground, the authorities have worked out how the concept of sufficient coping capacity can impact different municipal policy areas. For a number of policy areas, a coping capacity objective has been explored bearing this in mind. The addition of these extra objectives gives focus to the concept and can, over time, possibly contribute to a coping capacity implementation programme. The testing ground has demonstrated that embedding the added value of the area’s capacity to cope with floods in urban development policy would be quite feasible. The concept of sufficient coping capacity can also provide an impetus to profile various urban developments.
