Coastal Engineering at Katwijk

The Coastal Engineering work at Katwijk is an artificially reinforced stretch of dunes in the foredune area at Katwijk. The project encompasses a dyke hidden in the dunes and an underground parking garage. The flood defence barrier that was present at the start of the 21st century in Katwijk no longer met the legal safety standards for protection against flooding. The flood defence barrier did not run down the coastline, but rather through the town; approximately 3,000 people lived outside the protection of the dyke. Following Flood Protection Programme 2, a collaboration between the national government and the district water boards, coastal reinforcement work was therefore carried out in the period running from October 2013 up to and including February 2015 under the name Kustwerk Katwijk. Flood Protection Programme 2 is a part of the Delta Programme and falls under its implementation programme, the so-called Delta Plan for Flood Risk Management.

Results

The construction of the coastal engineering work completes the protection of Katwijk on the seaside of the town. The flood defence system on the seaside has been expanded. A new dyke section has been added along the boulevard. The existing stretch of dunes has been widened and a dyke has been built in the dunes. This solution provided the most possibilities in terms of both safety and spatial planning quality in Katwijk. The expansion of the dunes has created more space along the Katwijk coast for Nature and recreation. The coastal reinforcements did reduce existing parking facilities at the seaside. That is why a new underground parking garage was constructed between the dyke and the boulevard. The underground parking garage provides space for 670 cars and consists of one parking level and four parking rows that are 500 metres long.

In 2015, the design won the Rhineland Architecture Prize (Rijnlandse Architectuur Prijs (jury and public prize) and the Falco Award for Best Public Space 2015. The same year it was one of five designs nominated for the Gouden Piramide 2015 and nominated for the Agemaprijs 2015.  In 2016, the design won the  “BNA Best Building of the Year” jury and public award, the Prix d’ Excellence Award 2016, and the WAN Infrastructure Award.
