Goeree-Overflakkee in the Delta
The island of Goeree-Overflakkee is situated in the estuary of the major rivers. Over the past fifty years, agriculture has become highly dependent on the freshwater supply from the Haringvliet and Krammer inlets. The Water + Spatial Planning atelier has been engaged in order quickly to gain insight into conceivable measures required to secure the freshwater supply when the surrounding water salinises.
Results
Potential changes in the Haringvliet water management are the major decisive factors for any solutions envisaged for the island. Four scenarios show how the freshwater supply to the island can be rendered more efficient and how the island may be flushed. The Halskanaal recreational shipping connection has also been taken into consideration, as has the potential construction of climate dykes. The agricultural use of freshwater on the island constitutes the heart of the solution.
