Boskoop

Boskoop Greenport region is the largest tree nursery in the Netherlands. The sector intends to restructure, and has set up the Zuidwijk Agricultural Structural Reinforcement project to that end (October 2011 to December 2014). The underlying reasons for this project are the desired plot expansion, improving the accessibility by road, and climate change. A coherent analysis and perspective of the climate changes, in relation to changes in the tree nursery sector for the entire Greenport area, has not been conducted yet.

Results

At the testing ground, an initial impetus has been given to an integrated analysis of the freshwater supply issue, pluvial flooding, and salinisation in the Greenport. Data has been gathered from previous and ongoing studies. A comparison of this analysis and the sector observations has revealed that the number of businesses will fall from 600 to 200 in the medium term. Based on this outcome, a number of spatial strategies have been worked out that have been explored on the topography.

Two “design study” workshops have been conducted with representatives from the sector, municipalities, the province, the district water board, and the national government. The first workshop focused on analysing and defining the tasking, and involved a business visit to an innovative arboriculturist. The second workshop focused on finding design solutions and involved a consideration of the policy consequences, the costs, and public-private collaboration.
