Restructuring of Kerkewijk district
The Kerkewijk district in Veenendaal is being renovated in stages, from the Raadhuisstraat up to the Middellaan (a distance of some 1.5 km). This renovation has been prompted by the poor pavement quality and especially the waterlogging issues.
In order to minimise waterlogging, and also with a view to a future featuring increasingly heavier downpours, a rainwater sewer system will be constructed. This rainwater sewer system is a main artery of a capacity sufficient to allow the future connection of the adjoining streets/districts to the Kerkewijk sewer system.

The designers of the rainwater structural plan have calculated the required diameters of the sewers in both the Kerkewijk district itself and the sewers in the side street that may eventually be connected to the Kerkewijk sewer.
The rainwater sewer system will be connected to the Vallei canal (the surface water) through an outflow facility near the Kerkewijk district.
Results
Preparations for the first stage of the Kerkewijk restructuring (approx. 400 m, Raadhuisstraat-Industrielaan section) have been completed and this stage can be put out to tender. Work on this stage will commence in the first half of 2018.
The subsequent stage, the section that runs from the Industrielaan up to the Middellaan (approx. 1100 m), will probably be tackled in 2020. A complicating factor is the railway crossing. In collaboration with Prorail, we are exploring how we can improve the traffic situation near the railway. In addition, the rainwater sewer must run underneath the railway tracks.
Residents are encouraged to tie in with the project by disconnecting private downspouts and greening properties. The municipality has made grants available to this end.
