Construction of green roofs in Havenkwartier district

Several residents in the Deventer Havenkwartier district have taken the initiative of constructing green roofs on their own roofs and sheds, prompted by waterlogging issues in the area and the desire to enhance the liveability of the district. To realise the project, they have used the climate grant provided by the Drents Overijsselse Delta district water board.

Eight houses and sheds in the Havenkwartier district have been fitted with sedum roofs: green roofs covered by low-maintenance succulents (“Sedums”). The vegetation absorbs rainwater and prevents it from ending up in the downspout to be drained to the sewer system or the street.

The project has been incorporated into the “Havenkwartier expedition”, a tour explaining aspects such as spatial design and new developments in the district to interested parties. Within the expedition, the project serves as an example and source of inspiration to green roofs in urban areas.
