Above-ground rainwater drainage in new Berkel-Enschot housing estate
In a new housing estate in Berkel-Enschot, recessed shoulders and wadis drain rainwater to a central water storage. This reduces local waterlogging during severe downpours.
At the front or back of the lots, recessed shoulders or wadis drain rainwater to a central water storage. The water is absorbed into the subsoil. The public space design features different levels, as a result of which downpours will create variable dynamics. This can be experienced on one of the footpaths that cross the area. Local residents are responsible for the above-ground drainage of rainwater to the connected shoulder or wadi. This means that they will need to factor in such drainage in the development and design of their lots. This rainwater drainage method makes residents aware of the water on their lots.

Lessons to be learned from the project
In the new development project, houses are commissioned by the lot buyers themselves. Above-ground rainwater drainage deviates from the “standard” subsoil drainage method. This requires coordination with contractors, by the municipality in the permit procedure, by the project developer, and in the communications with future residents.
