Measures in the Oude Diep area to combat waterlogging

The Drents Overijsselse Delta district water board is allocating 3.8 million euros to the improvement of water discharge by the Oude Diep brook between Mantinge and Echten. For several years, the area has been struggling with waterlogging during severe rainfall. The plans were prompted by the rain that fell in May 2014, after which farmers were faced with several days of waterlogging. The Oude Diep will be widened on one side. The excavated soil will be used to raise low-lying sections of land. In addition, a large water storage facility will be created for the temporary storage of excess water. The measures are intended to future-proof the area, which comprises farmlands and nature reserves, and to improve its resilience against climate change.

The project measures are aimed at the temporary storage of more water in the so-called water system, to improve water discharge, and to meet several requirements stipulated by the Water Framework Directive. This goal is achieved by:

  • on one side, widening a stretch of 14 kilometres of main drainage canals for water storage and nature development;
  • the construction of 20 hectares of water storage;
  • raising 13 hectares of excessively low parcels;
  • the expansion of some culverts;
  • widening several square turns in main drainage canals;
  • computerising a weir;
  • putting drainage systems in nature reserves out of action;
  • creating fish passages in four weirs.
