Naturally cooling shutters at TU Campus Delft

During the construction of the new Oldelft Ultrasound building at the TU Campus in Delft, “green shutters” have been installed to provide natural cooling. The outer wall features a great deal of glass to let in natural light. Part of the glass is covered by 1.5m-wide shutters featuring various wind-resistant climbing plants. The plants on the shutters provide shade and keep out the sun, which keeps the building cooler. The green façades also provide room for birds and insects, with nesting boxes and other facilities. The shutters form part of a comprehensive green design featuring indoor greenery, atriums, patios and greenery surrounding the building. Thus, in addition to providing a cooling effect and boosting biodiversity, the greenery contributes to creating a healthy working environment. An important lesson is to factor in greenery from the very start of the design process and take account of selecting appropriate plant species, and watering and pruning them.
