Apeldoorn City Park
Between now and 2040, Apeldoorn city centre will be converted into the Apeldoorn City Park. The municipality will roll out a green carpet: the heart of the city will become a green and lively meeting place. It will be a pleasant location to live, work, shop and relax, every day of the year.
Project goal
The project aims to convert the city centre into an attractive location to relax, in a city park style – creating somewhere which is greener, more appealing, with greater biodiversity, and where residents and visitors can meet and interact. This will expand the functionality of the city centre. In addition to shopping, it will offer opportunities for living, working and recreation. The greening measures will also improve the city centre’s climate resilience.
Implementation
The city of Apeldoorn has developed along old streets and roads, such as Hoofdstraat and Grift. These historic lines still determine the city’s main structure. However, over recent years they have become less significant. The municipality will restore the main structure, tying in with current retail developments and planning designations in the fields of housing, mobility, the climate and public space. The first three projects undertaken by the municipality are Grift Park, Parkstraat and Grote Markthof.
Grift Park
Two streets, Hofstraat and Kanaalstraat, will combine to form a new park, Grift Park, in which the Grift watercourse will have more room. This park will be a nice place to exercise and meet others. On warm summer days, the Grift water will have a cooling effect.
Parkstraat
Hoofdstraat will be converted into “Park Street”: a green vein through the heart of the city centre, connecting the railway station area and Paleis het Loo castle. It will be a street on which you can shop, stroll and meet others, with less pavement and more greenery.
Grote Markthof
Grote Markthof square will become a courtyard right in the city centre, between the streets of Marktstraat, Beekstraat and Hoofdstraat and Raadhuisplein square. It will also feature lots of greenery, with tall trees to provide shade, many flowers and a sidewalk café for refreshments. Entrepreneurs, owners, residents, stakeholders and other interested parties have collaborated on the draft design for Grote Markthof.
