Apeldoorn City Park

Restoring a historic inner city in its old style, while introducing more greenery. This is what the municipality of Apeldoorn is doing within the framework of its “City Park” project.

Project objective

Apeldoorn city centre will be restored to what it looked like during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its characteristic Jugendstil façades. Apeldoorn will become a climate-proof city with restored architecture, ponds, and abundant greenery. It will be low-traffic and will feature sustainable mobility solutions, with ample opportunities for residents to meet each other.

Implementation

Historic lines, such as Hoofdstraat street and the De Grift brook will constitute the main urban structure once more. The connecting streets will be designed with lots of greenery. Greening squares and planting additional trees will turn the city centre into an urban park. The squares will serve as attractive meeting places and playgrounds will be designed in a manner that boosts biodiversity.

The restoration of the original, typical spring brooks will add to the city’s rainwater collection capacity. Greenery in the connecting streets is also conducive to water collection and helps to combat heat stress.

Vacant shops in Parkstraat street will be transformed into houses or workplaces. The boulevard leading to the railway station will be provided with additional greenery. A covered market hall will be constructed on Marktplein square: “Grote Markthof”. This hall will also feature ample greenery. Relocating bus routes will create more room for greenery in the city centre.
