Towards a climate-adaptive city of Arnhem
Several years ago, the municipality of Arnhem joined forces with the Climate-proof Arnhem platform to climate-proof the city. Wherever possible, the municipality is opting for spatial, green, and blue measures. The LIFE-IP Climate Adaptation programme is helping the municipality to continue its efforts.
Project objective
The knowledge and experience gained under this project will be used to help other government bodies and parties to raise awareness of climate adaptation. The project is intended to ensure that other parties will be actively involved in climate-proofing the Netherlands.
Implementation
The Climate-proof Arnhem platform is engaged in several neighbourhood-based campaigns. The platform is organising climate cafés and climate carrousels. In the event of spatial developments, it arranges “garden design sessions”. In addition, it has set up opportunities for residents to seek advice on greenery. Furthermore, the Climate-proof Arnhem platform and the municipality of Arnhem are providing support to housing corporations that have questions regarding climate adaptation issues.
The municipality of Arnhem is embarking on the “Cool Network”: constructing a network of shaded routes and cool spots in the city. The municipality is opting for eye-catching measures that will enhance the appeal of the city.
All the efforts are being monitored, including through “citizen science”: involving local residents in the climate adaptation tasking.
