Agriculture and nature climate adaptation action programmes

Climate effects such as drought and salinisation have major consequences for agriculture and nature. However, the effects differ sharply from one region to the next. A regional climate adaptation strategy for rural areas is thus vitally important.

Project objective

The project comprises the Agriculture Climate Adaptation Action Programme and the Nature Climate Adaptation Action Lines. The Action Programme and the Action Lines are set up from a regional and area-specific perspective, whilst national and regional taskings are interlinked. The soil-water system is the common denominator.

With respect to the agriculture sector, the goal is that by 2030, all farmers must be prepared to take a sustainable and effective stance on climate change. With respect to Nature, the goal is to realise a natural environment that is capable of coping with the pressure of climate change and that can foster the climate adaptation tasking in other sectors in rural and urban areas (nature-based solutions). An overarching goal is for all farmland and nature users to be aware of the necessity to utilise natural resources in a climate-proof manner.

Implementation

Within this project, a regional strategy is being developed for climate adaptation in rural areas. Furthermore, a public-private strategy for agriculture and Nature is being drawn up, in collaboration with the financial sector. This strategy is intended to promote investments in climate adaptation. All the know-how is amassed and shared in a dynamic agriculture and Nature climate adaptation knowledge agenda.

Results

The brochure Knowledge and Innovation for Climate Adaptation in Agriculture provides an overview of innovations and knowledge in the field of climate adaptation in agriculture and horticulture. It also explains important knowledge questions for the coming years and lists knowledge projects that are important for making agriculture and horticulture more climate-proof.
