KAKATOE – future-proof ecology of major bodies of water

How will climate change impact the ecological functioning of major bodies of water? This question is being addressed by the KAKATOE project. The Dutch acronym stands for climate adaptation compass and action table for future-proof and ecologically resilient major bodies of water in the Netherlands 2050.

Project objective

The project focuses on enhancing collaboration between such major national programmes as the Delta Programme, the Water Framework Directive, Natura 2000, and the Major Waters Programme Strategy. Its goal is mapping the uncertain impact of climate change on the functioning of the eco systems of major bodies of water.

Implementation

The first step involves a Climate Scan, to be conducted in collaboration with various knowledge institutes and programmes. The next steps will involve a Climate Adaptation Compass and an Action Table 2050. A Community of Practice (CoP) will assist in the development and field-testing of the knowledge. Various tools are available for use in regional processes. They will be helpful in discussing the use and necessity of eco system restoration and of taking adaptation measures.
