Framework for Climate Adaptive Buildings

Within a real estate portfolio, how do you identify the buildings running a high risk of heat stress, subsidence due to drought, waterlogging or flooding? The Framework for Climate Adaptive Buildings has been compiled to gain insight into such matters. This standard methodology, available free of charge, not only helps to identify high-risk buildings, but also helps to set up an adaptation plan with measures to minimise the biggest risks. The Framework has been developed by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC), in collaboration with public authorities, businesses and other organisations.

For whom?

Parties operating in the real estate sector: real estate parties, financiers, housing corporations and government authorities.

How can it be used?

This standard methodology enables you to identify the biggest physical climate risks within a portfolio. It can also be used to report on alignment with the EU Taxonomy relating to climate goal 2: climate adaptation. The methodology has been set up on the basis of open climate data and is transparent with respect to the methods used. The goal is to assess the climate impacts at the building level as accurately as possible. The methodology comprises three steps:

Part 1: Assessing the climate impacts for the area surrounding a building (the building environment score)

Part 2: Determining the building-specific vulnerability (the building score)

Part 3: Deciding on measures at the area and building levels (the adaptation strategy)

Who has developed the methodology?

The Framework for Climate Adaptive Buildings has been developed by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC), in collaboration with more than 40 parties, including: the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Province of Gelderland, the Province of Utrecht, the Province of Zuid-Holland, Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, the Dutch Trade Association of Insurers, W/E, Bouwinvest, MN, a.s.r. real estate, CBRE IM, Vesteda, IVBN, Altera, NSI, Achmea Real Estate, BPD, Esri Nederland, Wereldhave, Sweco, Climate Adaptation Services, Nelen & Schuurmans, TAUW, Arcadis, HKV, Deltares, Nieman, Royal HaskoningDHV, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Witteveen+Bos, &Flux, RIONED Foundation, OSKA, Groene Huisvesters and Merosch.
