How do you green your environment?

The province of Gelderland has developed three brochures to promote additional greenery in cities, villages, and farming areas. The brochures show various measures that can be used to green residential areas, shopping centres, and industrial estates. The province thus aims to boost biodiversity, whilst fostering a healthy and climate-proof environment in Gelderland and the rest of the Netherlands. Not only do the brochures show what can be done, they also explain the impact of the measures. A brief description of the three brochures is provided below.

How do we green residential areas?

What can be done to green residential areas? The brochure entitled Hoe vergroenen we woonwijken? (pdf, 3.1 MB) [in Dutch] presents fourteen greening measures. The measures not only boost biodiversity, they also help to meet the challenges of the changing climate and enhance the environment. In addition, the brochure provides an overview of the costs and benefits for governments, residents, and housing corporations.

How do we green shopping centres?

Climate change also affects shopping centres. For example, more extreme downpours entail a higher risk of water damage, whilst heat can lead to fewer shoppers and thus a loss of revenue. Industrial estates account for a large part of our country. That is why greening these estates is extremely effective. It is conducive to biodiversity, it bolsters a healthier work environment, and it helps us to better protect ourselves against the impact of climate change.
