National Water Model

As a result of climate change, our sea level is rising, and at certain periods of time rivers need to discharge larger volumes of water. At other times, water shortages threaten on account of drier weather. In addition, the effects of climate change play a part in the water quality of the Netherlands. These extremes have a large impact on flood risk management and the freshwater distribution in our country. Consequently, we are facing major challenges with respect to water management.

In the Netherlands, we are developing the National Water Model to ensure that water management policy is based on reliable and uniform information. The model provides insight into, inter alia, the effects of climate change, and thus assists national and regional governments in taking important measures in the field of water management.
