Urban Water Quality, Climate, and Adaptation Knowledge Document

A consortium operating within the framework of the Climate-proof Cities focus area of the Dutch National Water and Climate Knowledge and Innovation Programme (NKWK-KBS) has conducted a study into the impact of climate change and into potential side effects of adaptation measures on urban water quality. One of the results of this study is this Urban Water Quality, Climate and Adaptation knowledge document. The interactive document provides quick and easy insight into the potential effects of climate change and of adaptation measures on urban water quality. It also presents measures that can reduce or resolve potential bottlenecks in the field of water quality.

For whom?

The knowledge document has been developed for water managing authorities.

How can it be used?

The document offers several routes:

• After exploring the effects of climate change on water quality, you may click the themes of waterlogging, drought or heat to find out the effects on various control variables or to discover suitable adaptation measures.
• To find out how an adaptation measure will impact water quality, you can start at the theme of climate adaptation measures.
• Are you interested in improving urban water quality at a particular location? Then start at an indicator that affects water quality, such as nutriment content, water temperature or pollution. Each indicator is determined by various control variables. With each control variable, potential measures are presented for improving water quality.

Who has developed the knowledge document?

The knowledge document has been developed by Arcadis consultants, Royal HaskoningDHV consultants, Tauw consultants, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment RIVM, Deltares research institute, and Climate Adaptation Services.
