Wheel of Justice

Are you planning to take various perspectives into consideration when taking adaptation measures? If so, the Wheel of Justice, developed by the Klimaatrechtvaardig Rotterdam (Just Climate Rotterdam) platform, will be helpful. The Wheel helps you map out whether you are factoring in groups that are vulnerable to the consequences of climate change.

For whom?

Municipalities and other parties engaged in climate adaptation.

How can it be used?

The Wheel can be used to map out whether you are taking sufficient account of groups that are vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. The Wheel helps you gain more insight into missing perspectives and find more just ways to set up a project. A step-by-step plan guides you through its use.

What does the Wheel of Justice show?

The Wheel visualises “marginalisation” and “privilege”. Marginalised refers to groups of people whom the majority of society perceives as less important, and who also have less power and fewer opportunities. Privileged, on the other hand, refers to the group of people who have the most power and the most opportunities. The majority of marginalised groups are found in the outer ring of the Wheel, whilst the groups with the most privileges are found in the innermost ring. The Wheel features a range of categories, such as income, language, skin colour and living situation. It encourages users to consider whether these different categories play a part in the action perspective of a project, its impact on well-being, social exclusion and discrimination, and related information and communication.

Who has developed the Wheel of Justice?

The Wheel of Justice has been developed by the Klimaatrechtvaardig Rotterdam (Just Climate Rotterdam) platform. It is based on “The Wheel of Power / Privilege” by Sylvia Duckworth.
